Custom Compounding Formulations

What is Compounding?

Pharmacy compounding combines the art and science of medication preparation, into a fully customized prescription to cater to each individual patient. The patient’s prescription is made uniquely for them and them alone.

During the 1950’s, standardized medication became popular. While still offered, this ‘one size fits all’ method of preparation does not work for every patient. Compounding can be customized down to the very last detail, including dosage, form, taste, and ingredients.

Health Canada has stated that compounded prescriptions are both legal and ethical as long as they are prescribed by a licensed practitioner for a specific patient and compounded by a licensed pharmacy.

Prescribers and pharmacists may choose to provide compounded medication to patients, allowing them to accommodate for allergies and sensitivities, flavour profile, forms of administration and potency levels. Medication that is not available by the manufacturer can often be compounded as well.
